Hi everyone,
The jabber service at ra.purplecow.org has been upgraded, re-jigged and generally made “better”. The old deployment was starting to creak a little, so it was well time for a cleanup. The new service is running on interact.purplecow.org and all accounts have been transferred.
You should be aware that your logins and rosters have been preserved. You will have have to re-auth any non-purplecow contacts, however.
You can reach me at andre@interact.purplecow.org
A quick set of FAQs:
Q: How do I use the service?
A: Head over to www.jabber.org and download a client. Pidgin works on near anything, Pandion is pretty slick on Windows and Adium is the popular choice for MacOS. Notably, one can make iChat connect to a jabber server. Simply register an account using the client (you can use ra.purplecow.org as your server, or otherwise pick another public host).
Q: Are my messages logged, stored, searched, indexed, archived or used for advertising?
A: No. All messages vanish from the server as soon as they are delivered.
Q: Can I use a normal jabber service to communicate with people using Gtalk or Google Talk?
A: Sure. Just add their gmail address to your contact list and you’ll be able to talk.
Q: Does it cost anything?
A: No.
Q: What’s the SLA on this service? Should I rely on it?
A: No. While the service is reliable, there is no formal change control process and no SLA assurance at all.

After watching another TV show where prisons ’shiv’ each other with a ’shank’ made from a filed down toothbrush, I have a simple product idea:
Invent a toothbrush that isn’t usable as a stabby weapon. Make the bloody thing out of balsa wood or something.

I check for something interesting in the post: I get, on average, 30 pages a day of advertising junkmail.
My phone rings: Someone is trying to sell me insurance.
My phone beeps: Some bar I’ve never been to is sending me advertising.
I walk past a shopping centre without turning bluetooth off on any of my devices: I get five or six BlueSpams from companies I’d never do business with.
I check my email: At least 100 spams a day; never mind what the server has already thrown away.
I try to use an instant messaging service in peace: spIM. Honestly.
Skype: Russian brides for sale, 24/7.
Walk down the street: People try to push fliers into my hands.
Someone’s at the door: A religious travelling salesman.
