Jabber Service Update
August 25, 2008
Hi everyone,
The jabber service at ra.purplecow.org has been upgraded, re-jigged and generally made “better”. The old deployment was starting to creak a little, so it was well time for a cleanup. The new service is running on interact.purplecow.org and all accounts have been transferred.
You should be aware that your logins and rosters have been preserved. You will have have to re-auth any non-purplecow contacts, however.
You can reach me at andre@interact.purplecow.org
A quick set of FAQs:
Q: How do I use the service?
A: Head over to www.jabber.org and download a client. Pidgin works on near anything, Pandion is pretty slick on Windows and Adium is the popular choice for MacOS. Notably, one can make iChat connect to a jabber server. Simply register an account using the client (you can use ra.purplecow.org as your server, or otherwise pick another public host).
Q: Are my messages logged, stored, searched, indexed, archived or used for advertising?
A: No. All messages vanish from the server as soon as they are delivered.
Q: Can I use a normal jabber service to communicate with people using Gtalk or Google Talk?
A: Sure. Just add their gmail address to your contact list and you’ll be able to talk.
Q: Does it cost anything?
A: No.
Q: What’s the SLA on this service? Should I rely on it?
A: No. While the service is reliable, there is no formal change control process and no SLA assurance at all.
